A lesson to prepare students for the reading exam of level 1 functional skills English and to prepare them to move up to GCSE. Can be used for any lesson where the inferring skill needs to be developed.
Includes:
A reading comprehension on a descriptive text.
Vocab development.
inferring from images and inferring from context to help students understand difficult language.
All resources are editable, extension activities have been included to aid differentiation , lesson has been designed with lesson objectives using Bloom’s taxonomy.

A collection of functional skills resources designed for level 1 Edexcel all resources are adaptable so can be scaffolded to use with entry level students.

An activity book for students to practice the skills they need to pass the exam. Looks at identifying all the techniques language and structure for paper 1, looks at writing PEACE paragraphs, comparing texts and creative writing activities.
I made this after teaching this course for three years upon getting students feedback on what they struggled on. Hope it helps.

A starter and main activity of about 30 minutes in time the activites get steadily harder beginning with identifying word classes and connotations and then analysing and then seeing if the students can also apply it to question 4 paper 1, peer assessment table is included to close the loop, helpful hints have been placed in there to give guidence to studetns and extention activities for the more able.
A lesson based on the theme of alcohol addressing A01 and general paper 2 questions.
The lesson has two sources one from 19th C and one from the 21st looks at attitudes and values.
Comes complete with writing frames for students to choose from (questions 2,3 and 4) using PEACE paragraphs.
Self/peer assessment included.
Plenary consists of a revision sheet that goes over the skills and marks of all the questions across the GCSE English language papers.
Lesson is scaffolded with extension activities with every task - everything is timed and should last two hours.
English functional skills writing based on politics using emotive language language, connectives, a spelling rule and grammatical rule, designed for a three hour lesson.
Speaking and listening exam preparation.
Looks at mark scheme for both exam tasks to suit the new spec of the Edexcel functional skills lesson.
New Year comprehension included for Functional Skills level 1 but can be adapted for Functional Skills Level 2 or GCSE English.
Question 4 paper 2 of GCSE English language for AQA.
The theme is on money and life choices designed for a two hour lesson. The lesson objectives are scaffolded using Bloom’s taxonomy verbs.
Starter - statements promoting critical thinking (with answers)
Recap - Explode a quote (sample answer)
Task 1 - perspective and attitude teaching and 15 minute task
Task 2 - Inference about life choices and language analysis extension 15 Minute task but you can allow extra time for class discussion.
Task 3 - Analysis of sample answer, students label the answer using terms from the mark scheme.
Task 4 - reading of the two texts and analysis (video link as well)
Task 5 - question 5 quick attempt
Task 5 - Plenary students identify themes and ideas as of being 19th or 21st Century attitudes.

There are a mix of assemblies and English lessons set for about GCSE range, all resources are editable and suitable for the month of October.

Both books are over twenty pages and have extension activities , they were designed to help students identify language techniques and to know how to answer question 5 with multiple options to choose from to practice these skills.

All resources are fully editable and a great way to start the year.
A brief introduction into question 3 paper 2 showing the students how to answer the question and has a sample question for the students to answer, comes with a writing frame and some scaffolding. Made primarily for home learning but can be used by a teacher.

A speaking and listening resource based on the theme of employability. Looks at:
Ranking employability skills in order of importance. - Makes students think about the skills they might need.
** Making civil requests to avoid conflict - resolving conflicts without making the situations escalate and answering difficult questions in a work interview.
Interpreting body language - This gets students to think about what they are communicating by the way they are standing.
A worksheet and powerpoint to show how to use brackets and dashes, I give the explanation of how to use them on the powerpoint/video and then the students correct six examples, then write an example of their own. This is aimed for students doing either Functional skill or GCSE English language and who need to vary their punctuation usage.
A resource for anyone who is looking to increase the depth of their analysis for when answering language analysis questions. This technique is used to help students say more, moving away from a grade 4 and moving towards the higher levels. It’s been done with AQA GCSE English language in mind but I believe it has it’s benefits for all kinds of language analysis, regardless of specifications, I’ve included an accompanying worksheet and a copy of the PowerPoint with a sample answer.
